Samvel Gasparyan won Silver (Total) in the Men’s 102 kg Category (2024 European Weightlifting Championships)
Day 8 of the European Championships in Sofia meant it was time to see the men’s heavyweight categories unfold, and athletes competing in the 102 kg category didn’t disappoint us in the slightest. In a battle for the top podium spot and points for Paris qualification, 11 of the best lifters in this weight class came ready to show out.
One of them was Samvel Gasparyan from Armenia, who managed to deliver an outstanding performance.
He started strongly with all three of his Snatch attempts successful and a result of 180 kg, which was enough to give him the bronze medal for the movement.
From there on, the C&J, things were looking more shakily as he missed his second attempt of 216 kg, but thankfully, the Armenian managed to recover and lifted 216 kg in third attempt for the silver medal for the movement. His total of 396 kg was enough for him to win the overall silver medal for the 102 kg category.
In 2023, Gasparyan competed in the 109 kg category and managed to win the gold medal at last year’s Europeans in his home country. In the lower weight class of 102 kg, his biggest achievement so far has been winning the European title in 2021 and getting three silver medals, including the one from this year.
