Moldova Set to Host the 2025 IWF European Championships
The 2024 IWF European Championships in Sofia just ended, and we hope you enjoyed our exclusive coverage. In the days after the competition, the IWF gathered for an EWF Congress in Sofia to discuss new projects focused on competitions, athletes, and spectators, as President Mohammed Jalood alluded to a “new culture” being created in the sport.
At this congress, the IWF decided to host arrangements for next year’s junior, youth, and senior competitions. It’s now clear that the 2025 European Championships will be hosted in April in Moldova, the Youth events will take place in August in Poland, and the Junior Championships will take place in October in Albania.
More precise details and the exact dates will be announced soon.
Other news announced at this congress was the retirement of Antonio Urso, who served three terms as president of the EWF and is now general secretary of the IWF. He is expected to remain in office until the next IWF elections, which are set to happen in the first part of 2025.
Along with that, IWF President Jalood was awarded the highest possible EWF honor, the “Gold Collar,” by Antonio Conflitti, EWF President, with the following message:
“Considering your admirable commitment in supporting sport and Olympic values, also considering the outstanding achievements in leading the IWF through the worst moment in our sport’s history, confirming weightlifting in the Olympic program, and establishing confidence with the IOC, I am honored to present you this recognition.”
