The European Champion Giulia Imperio Failed to Get On the Podium At the IWF Grand Prix

Last year, Giulia Imperio was crowned the European Champion 2022 in the competition held in Tirana, Albania. Later on, she managed to snag two more gold medals at the 2022 Mediterranean Games – so naturally, a good performance was expected from her during the competition in Doha, especially considering that a good result was vital for her Olympic qualification.

This year hasn’t been as strong for the Italian as she failed to defend her European title and finished second in the Yerevan, Armenia competition. Her total at the time was 183 kg, with an 83 kg snatch and 100 kg in the clean and jerk. With that said, from her social media posts, it was clear that the Italian is working on improving her first lift, recently sharing a video of making the 85 kg for the snatch.

Even though she didn’t podium yesterday, on the second competition day at the IWF Grand Prix in Doha, Imperio actually managed to improve her total result by 2 kg. The Italian only managed to lift her openers and ended with an 85 kg snatch, 100 kg clean-and-jerk, and a total of 185 kg. Her second and third attempts for the snatch – 87 kg both failed and the same happened with the clean and jerk – she tried for 102 kg and 103 kg but failed both attempts. This gave her only the sixth spot with two successful lifts, but that was still an improvement considering her previous results.

Imperio’s Career So Far

We already talked about her impressive achievements as a senior, but the reality is her career kicked off in 2018 when she managed to win the silver medal at the European Youth Weightlifting Championship   under-17 y.o. .  In 2019, she added to her resume a bronze medal for the snatch event at the Junior World Weightlifting Championship held in Suva, Fiji.
