Davit Hovhannisyan Stand on All Podiums with Gold, Silver and Bronze at 2023 IWF Grand Prix II, Qatar
This Olympics qualifying event has had no shortage of excitement and the men’s 96 kg category was no different. Armenia’s Hovhannisyan came to show talent and skill in Snatch and his relentlessness in Clean and Jerk.
Davit Hovhannisyan started swinging real high when it came to the snatch, he stood on top of his group on two of his three attempts, he started with 160 kg, that put him shortly on second place with Tae Bong Yang in first place ahead of him by only 1 kg.
Then Davit went to the platform and lifted 165 kg on his second attempt that solidified him in first place after Tae Bong Yang failed his 167 kg attempt, and for his third and final Snatch attempt if lifted 170 kg having him stand on top of the podium and securing a gold medal for Armenia’s team.
The Clean and Jerk wasn’t as smooth as his Snatch performance, Hovhannisyan started on top with a 200 kg Clean and Jerk, but things started to go not so well for him with the second attempt, when stepped onto the platform facing a 205 kg Clean and Jerk, he did the Clean, but had to drop the bar as soon as he stood up, and fell backwards onto the floor as help came quickly to check on him.
He was fine and tried to come back again for the third attempt to face the same 205 kg bar, that would have made him win gold, again for Clean and Jerk but in this attempt he failed the Clean after he was for what seemed like a long time of him hyping himself up to lift it.
With his 170 kg Snatch and successful 200 kg Clean and Jerk, Armenia’s Davit Hovhannisyan stood second on the total podium with a total of 370 kg, only 1 kg behind Turkmenistan’s Shahzadbek Matyakubov.
