IWF European Weightlifting Championships 2024 – Men’s 55 kg Division Recap
Day 2 of the European Weightlifting Championships in Sofia showed us exciting lifting in the Men’s 55-kg weight category, where nine female athletes were performing in the first session of the European Champs.
This day became a day of triumph for the Bulgarian team as two powerful lifters Angel Rusev and Zarkov Dzhan succeeded in occupying the first and third places respectively.
Bulgaria Reigns the Battle, Despite Rusev’s Shoulder Strain in the Snatch Session
Let’s meet the TOP 3 lifters who claimed the spotlight with exemplary lifts and amazing performances:
- 🥇 Angel Rusev (BUL) – 109-135-244
- 🥈 Shamilishvili Ramini (GEO) – 111-130-241
- 🥉 Zarkov Dzhan (BUL) – 102-133-235
The winner in the category was Bulgarian Angel Rusev who did Snatch at 109 kg on the second try, Clean & Jerk at 135 kg on the first attempt, and 244 kg in total.
The second place was occupied by his opponent from Georgia Shamilishvili Ramini who did 241 kg in total, 111 kg in Snatch on the third attempt, and 130 kg in Clean & Jerk on the second attempt.
The bronze medalist was Zarkov Dzhan from Bulgaria who snatched 102 kg on the third attempt, 133 kg on the last try in Clean & Jerk, and got a total of 235 kg.
Top Athletes’ Review
The 55-kg weight class winner Angel Rusev is a Bulgarian weightlifter who is a four-time gold medalist at the European Championships, as well as the European Junior & U23 championships. His personal best was 111-147-258 at the 2021 European Championships where he set a new European Junior World Record in Snatch and Clean & Jerk.
Speaking about the silver medalist Georgian Shamilishvili Ramini, he is a silver medalist at the European Championships in Yerevan. Today he showed 8 kilos less than his totals at the European Championships in Yerevan, still winning a silver medal.
The bronze holder became Zarkov Dzhan, the promising young lifter from Bulgaria, who took the bronze medal at the 2021 European Youth Championships in Poland.
Snatch results:
Considering the Snatch performance, we can claim that overall athletes showed good performance, just with several no-lifts, while one athlete, Brachi Garcia Josue from Spain bombed out.

- 🥉Angel Rusev (BUL) – 109 kg
The situation in the Clean & Jerk exercise was the following: half of the lifters had two ‘no-lift’ attempts, dominantly with the first successful tries. Here’s the list of Top 3 lifters who got medals in the exercise:

- 🥇 Rusev Angel (BUL) – 135 kg
- 🥈 Zarkov Dzhan (BUL) – 133 kg
- 🥉 Brachi Garcia Josue (ESP) – 131 kg
