WWC 2023, Day 9 – Men’s 96 kg Results: Egypt prevails today while South Korea and Iraq chase with minimal gap

After a Tuesday break, everyone was eagerly waiting for the next bright performance of this Qualifying event in Riyadh in the category of Men’s 96 kg. We’re approaching the peak of the WWC 2023, so the tension runs high, and athletes are pushing themselves even harder to lift their maximum weight to surpass their rivals.

As we supposed the leading countries in this weight division were Egypt, South Korea, and Iraq. Frankly speaking, we were surprised that the Chinese athletes weren’t on the podium. Today’s division leaders surpassed our expectations by showing decent results.

The gold medal went to a lifter from Egypt Ibrahim Karim Abokahla who was at the peak of his physical performance by lifting amazing 387 kg in total, 174 kg in Snatch, and 213 kg in Clean & Jerk. Let’s say some words about the winner: Karim Abokahla is a well-known Egyptian weightlifter who took numerous wins at the African and Mediterranean Games, WWC in Tashkent, and other contests. By the way, he competed there at the 89 kg weight class. His last win was silver for Clean&Jerk of 212 kg at the Mediterranean Games in Algeria in 2022.

Ibrahim Karim Abokahla lifted 213 kg in C&J that brought him gold.

His contender from South Korea Jongbeom Won showed himself no worse: he gained silver in the 96 kg division with a total of 384 kg, 172 kg in Snatch, and 212 kg in Clean & Jerk. We already know this Korean weightlifter from the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jinju 2023: he took silver in his weight category with the results of 171-211-382. As we can see he improved his results today and also secured a silver medal for his country.

Iraqi lifter Qasim Al Lami saved bronze by performing 175 kg in Snatch,  204 kg in Clean & Jerk, and 379 kg in total. This lifter participated at the Arab Games 2023 in Algeria by taking several medals: in Snatch (172 kg) and C&J (192 kg).
