Tian Tao Announces Retirement from International Competition
Yesterday, Tian Tao, a real legend of the weightlifting world, announced his announced from international competition after competing in the 89 kg category at the IWF World Cup.
The Chinese weightlifter took to Instagram to make this important announcement, stating that he’s unable to lift anymore and he can’t give the sport what he wants to, which is why he’s stepping away from international competition.
During the IWF World Cup in Thailand, Tao lifted 171 kg on the Snatch and then attempted to break the Clean & Jerk World Record twice by going for 226 kg.
However, he was unsuccessful and finished outside the rankings due to a lack of total weight lifted. By being unable to pass his teammate Li Dayin, Tao was unable to qualify for the Paris Games, which might be what influenced his decision to retire.
In his career, Tian Tao has won 8 international competitions, including the World Championships and the Asian Championships. He also won a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro and held the World Record for the Clean & Jerk for the 96 kg category.
