Olympic Champion Meso Hassona Is Out of the 2024 IWF Weightlifting World Cup Due to Injury

Meso Hassona, the weightlifter from Qatar, lost his shot at going for the world record at the 2024 IWF World Cup after getting injured in Phuket.

The gold medalist from the Olympic Games in Tokyo claimed he was in fantastic shape heading into the competition and was ready to “show the weightlifting world what he can do.”

Unfortunately, he suffered an injury while preparing for the final qualifying event and will not be participating in the men’s 102 kg sessions; however, he will weigh so he can be eligible for Paris.

As a rule, all athletes must participate in the pre-competition presentation and be available for anti-doping testing, even if they don’t actually participate in the event later on.

How serious is Meso Hassona’s Injury?

The injury happened just three days ago in the training hall in Phuket, as Hessona was going for a 230 kg Clean & Jerk. Hessona said he felt pain in the hip abductor during the lift, and he was immediately taken to a hospital, where the doctors confirmed that he suffered a hip abductor strain and had to rest for the next few weeks.

What About His Olympic Dream?

This injury is unlikely to affect Hassona’s Olympic aspirations as there are many months to recover. However, the Qatari weightlifter was disappointed that he couldn’t showcase his form during the IWF World Cup

When asked about the Olympics, he said the following:

“I will be there. The only disappointment is that I wanted to show the world some big numbers here. I was hoping for more than 180 kilograms in the snatch, maybe 181-182, and I wanted 232 kilograms for the world record in the clean and jerk. I’m not going to get upset about it. This is weightlifting, and it can happen.”
