Mattie Rogers Will Miss the Olympic Games in Paris in Shocking Turn of Events
American weightlifting champion Mattie Rogers announced that she will not participate in the last Olympic qualifications in the IWF World Cup in Thailand due to an injury that prevents her from training properly.
In a new Instagram post, Rogers states that she has been battling this injury for months now, but putting band-aid over band-aid hasn’t given the positive results she hoped for, and now she has to forfeit her Olympic dream, at least when it comes to the Games in Paris. In her statement, the American Olympian mentions that she will try to return to competitions this year, with her target being the World Championships:
“I have my target return to international competition set as worlds this year, so I will begin qualifying for that in a few months. I am truly excited to be able to attend local and national meets again in that process.
Again, trying to find the slivers of good and positive in this. I am taking this month away from the barbell and doing fun and painless activities to move my body & even dabbling in some (scaled) CrossFit a few times a week. I’ll share all of that with you & I hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I do.”
Mattie hasn’t officially stated what her injury is, but some speculation says it’s connected to a nerve so it takes longer to heal compared to more common tendon and muscle issues that often plague Olympic weightlifters.
So far in her career, Rogers has won the Pan American Championships twice, has finished second in 4 World Championships, and represented the United States at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where she finished sixth overall in the women’s 87 kg category.
