IWF Grand Prix II, Day 8 Recap – Men’s 96 kg Results

The eighth day of the Grand Prix II in Doha showed us an incredible A-Game battle in the Men’s 96-kg category. Nine male athletes were trying to improve their current accomplishments and progress by loading the barbell with greater weights with every attempt.

For some lifters, it was a real challenge, while others managed to outperform their previous results and even left their rival behind the top positions.

Highlights of the Category Men’s 96 kg: Matyakubov Makes Turkmenistan Celebrates Gold Medal

Today nine weightlifters from the 96-kg class captured our sights with promising entry openers and their further weight orders. But only properly chosen tactics and preserving well-built technique benefited the following Top 3 favorites:

The gold winner of the category became Matyakubov Shahzadbek from Turkmenistan who did a Snatch of 167 kg that resulted in a gold medal, Clean&Jerk of 204 kg, and  371 kg in total. He managed to prevail over his contender with a minimal gap from second place by one kilo.

Silver medal went to Hovhannisyan Davit from Armenia who performed a total of 370 kg, 170 kg in Snatch, and 200 kg in Clean&Jerk. Earlier, at the European Championships in Yerevan, he won gold by lifting heavier weights, namely 172 kg in Snatch, 205 kg in Clean & Jerk, with 377 kg in total. 

The third spot went to Yang Tae Bong who lifted 161 kg in the Snatch round, 201 kg in Clean & Jerk, and in total he lifted 362 kg. The weight margin between him and the silver medalist’s total was 8 kilos.

To conclude, here’s the list of all medalists in the Men’s 96-kg division who got single medals in every round:

  1. Matyakubov Shahzadbek won 2 gold medals in Clean & Jerk and total.
  2. Hovhannisyan Davit won gold in Snatch, silver in totals, and bronze in Clean & Jerk.
  3. Yang Tae Bong got silver in Clean & Jerk and bronze in total.
  4. Asayonak Petr won bronze in Snatch.
