Men’s 96 kg Division Recap – IWF European Weightlifting Championships 2024

Day 7 of the European Weightlifting Championships displayed an impressive lifting session in the Men’s 96-kg weight category, where 10 male athletes were performing in the Group A.

The battle in the division was attention-hooking as the lifters of the Top 3 were competing to surpass others with extreme weights and improve their personal bests.

The winner in today’s weight class was MKRTCHYAN Hakob from Armenia who lifted 166 kg in Snatch at the second attempt, 209 kg in Clean & Jerk at the third try, and a total of 375 kg.

The second place was occupied by HOVHANNISYAN Davit from Armenia who got in a total of 374 kg, he lifted 169 kg in Snatch, and 205 kg in Clean & Jerk.

The bronze medalist was KHADASEVICH Pavel: he lifted 165 kg in Snatch, 195 kg in Clean & Jerk, and got 360 kg in the sum of two exercises.

Top Athletes’ Review

The Men’s 96-kg weight category winner Hakob Mkrtchyan, an Armenian weightlifter, who is a World Champion and European Champion competing in the 77 kg and 85 kg categories. He became the first Armenian to win gold at the Summer Youth Olympics as he won the 77-kg class at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.

What about the silver medalist, HOVHANNISYAN Davit, is an Armenian lifter who is a two-time gold medalist at the European Championships in 2022 and 2023, also took bronze at the 2019 Europeans in Batumi. He’s a European Junior Champion of 2016.

The bronze medalist Pavel Khadasevich, an Olympian competing in the 85-kg category until 2018 and 89 kg starting in 2018. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the 85-kg category, finishing 7th. At the 2018 World Championships, he got silver.

Snatch results:

The Snatch session was full of no lifts, as almost half of the athletes didn’t manage to cope with the ordered weights. The leaders showed quite equal results with a minimal weight gap: 

🥇HOVHANNISYAN Davit (ARM) – 169 kg
🥈MKRTCHYAN Hakob (ARM) –  166 kg
🥉KHADASEVICH Pavel (AIN) –  165 kg

During the Clean & Jerk exercise, there were lots of unsuccessful lifts on the third attempt. Just the session’s leader MKRTCHYAN Hakob did all successful lifts:
