About the Chinese team’s participation in the AWC
The world’s most dominant country in weightlifting, China withdrew this February’s remaining 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualification opportunity, namely from the upcoming Asian Championship.
Let’s outline the reason for such a decision. The Chinese weightlifting team has already participated in three key competitions in a row in a period from September to December 2023. These tournaments included the World Championship in Riyadh, which is a compulsory Olympic qualification event, the Asian Games in Hangzhou, and the Grand Prix in Qatar.
To have some rest, both physical and mental, and adjust the proper rhythm for future competition, the Chinese weightlifting team decided to take part in the Thailand World Cup held at the end of March which is also a compulsory qualification event.
Considering this fact, Chinese athletes’ absence at the 2024 AWC will enable other countries to compete and show their best. It must be mentioned that China has five women’s and three men’s weight divisions leading the total ranking.
For instance, Li Fabin (61 kg weight class) and Liu Huanhua (102 kg weight class) are supposed to be the strongest lifters. While Li Dayin and Tian Tao, both from the 89-kg weight class, will compete for the final slot, facing tough competition from Bulgarian Nasar, Italian Pizzolato, and Venezuelan Vallenilla.
