On average, people usually go to the gym 2-3 times per week. You’ll pay a monthly membership and share the gym with others. Since you don’t really go there to talk, not if you’re serious about getting your planned workout done anyway. You also have to travel to the gym and then go home. That costs both money and, more importantly, time.

While investing in a home gym might seem expensive, consider all these drawbacks that a regular gym has and put them on paper to see how at which point you’d break even. Plus, with a home gym, you save plenty of time – a premium resource that is limited for all of us.

Generally, getting a home gym is a great idea, but it is also a long-term investment. More people in your household can use it, and they can use it on demand and on a whim. How do you buy all that expensive gear to fill up your basic home gym setup? Where do I start?

That’s where I come in. I’ll guide you on everything essential in your home gym to cover your bases and workout routines.

Setting your home gym up can be a difficult task, because even if you already have all of the equipment you need, you still need to arrange it in a way that makes it look (at least somewhat) aesthetically pleasing. Most importantly, it needs to be functional and can’t be in the way. Let’s go over a few ideas.

1. Olympic Lifting Home Setup

For a home setup, a squat stand (like the Titan Fitness T-3 Series Short Squat Stand) with an integrated pull-up bar is usually central to the layout because it allows for exercises like squats, overhead presses, and pull-ups.

Alongside the rack, you also need a quality Olympic barbell (the one we recommend is the ROGUE Echo Bar 2.0) and an assortment of bumper plates for performing Olympic lifts like snatches and clean and jerks.

Place the squat stand against a sturdy wall to ensure safety during heavy lift. You can also mount an adjustable bench directly to the stand. This is going to save a lot of space and will allow for a variety of exercises (like bench presses at different angles).

The barbell and bumper plates can be close to the squat rack for easy access, but make sure you have enough room for full range of motion during lifts.

If you don’t have anything over your floor to protect it (like a rug or carpet), it’s good to place some protective flooring, like REP’s Rubber Floor Tiles, which is important for your safety and will also protect both your floor and the equipment. 2. Small Home Gym Setup

Just because you have a small space doesn’t mean you can’t fit a decent amount of equipment in it.

You can also put an adjustable bench nearby for some alternative resistance training or some HIITworkouts. 3. Bedroom Home Gym Setup

If you want to use your bedroom as a home gym, there are ways of making that happen without compromising the room’s primary function.

For example, you can take a ladder wall bar and attach a bench directly to it to save space when it’s not in use. The equipment can be placed parallel to the bed, with a barbell (we highly recommend the REP Alpine Weightlifting Bar) and some plates placed on the floor by the foot of the bed.

This way, the equipment will be organized around the perimeter, and the central floor area will remain open. You can also stack plates in the corner and put the barbell inside which can save a lot of space.

4. Garage Gym Setup

Garages that double as home gyms are pretty frequent, as the amount of space they usually have allows for a well-equipped and organized home gym.

You can use a robust power rack and locate it centrally in front of the back wall. This is essential for heavy lifting, including squats, bench presses, and pull-ups, and you can hang some resistance bands, for instance ROGUE Echo Resistance Bands, on it and place plates behind it.

You can also place a bench right underneath the rack and an exercise bike to the left of the bench and rack, against the side wall. This will create a nice amount of floor space between the power rack and the exercise bike, and you can fit a mat there.  

Any additional equipment, like an exercise ball, plate rack, or foam rollers can be placed against the back wall. Make sure to organize it neatly to save as much space as possible.

5. Corner Home Gym Setup

A corner home gym needs to be compact but functional and designed to maximize the variety of workouts you can use it for.

Start with placing plyometric boxes in the center of the floor and suspend a punching bag from the ceiling. A pull-up bar can be installed between the two corner walls to give you a solid anchor for pull-ups and hanging exercises.

To the left, there can be a wall-mounted pegboard for grip strength exercises, and you can secure a barbell with some small weight plates horizontally on the pegboard.

You can also fit some medicine balls by the walls for variety. And speaking of walls — you want a nice substantial shelf mounted to the wall to hold your accessories. A shelf will keep them organized and within reach and won’t take up any floor space.

If you really want to fit a squat rack there, think about the folding one – just make sure you have enough space on the sides for the barbell.

6. Calisthenics Home Gym Setup

Mount a power rack to the wall. This will save you floor space, and it can be equipped with things like gymnastics rings and a pull-up bar for bodyweight exercises.

This entire setup revolves around equipment being mounted to the wall or placed against the wall to conserve as much floor space as possible.

7. Basement Gym Setup

Along with the garage, the basement is another room that often gets converted into a gym because it offers a decent amount of space and you can fit quite a bit of equipment in it.

This is definitely something that can be done, but if you want to get the most bang for your back, there are things to consider before you make an investment.

1. Training Goals

Think about what you want to focus on — cardio, strength training, flexibility, or a little bit of everything? Your equipment needs to be tailored to the workouts you want to do and the training goals you’re after.

2. Living Space

Of course, the availability of space is a huge deal. Some may have a whole room they can dedicate to workouts, the others may have just a small corner in the living room that will only allow for a minimalist home gym setup.

Think about the dimensions of your space to see what kind of equipment you can fit in it. There is a lot of compact and multi-functional gym equipment out there, so even a small space can be turned into an effective gym.

Establish a realistic budget – determine the amount you’re willing to spend for your home gym. For a budget home gym setup, essentials are a priority, and make sure to consider both the initial cost and the cost of long-term maintenance.

If you’re building a new home gym, it is imperative to cover the essentials. These are pieces of gear that allow you to cover most of your muscle groups through a wide variety of exercises.

I’m, of course, talking about a bench, a barbell, some weight plates to go with the barbell, some dumbbells, and, if you really want to cover all your bases – then a squat rack.

1. Adjustable Bench

A bench is undoubtedly one of the most essential pieces of affordable home gym equipment for a home gym, offering immense versatility and functionality.

Incorporating a bench into your workout space allows you to perform a vast array of exercises that target different muscle groups, such as bench presses, seated shoulder presses, tricep dips, and dumbbell rows, to name a few.

Additionally, a bench can be adjusted to various angles, enabling you to work on your muscles from multiple positions and achieve well-rounded strength.

Due to its multi-purpose nature, a bench is almost mandatory in a home gym setup, maximizing your workout potential while saving space and minimizing the need for multiple specialized pieces of equipment.

The plates also have a low bounce, which helps them absorb almost all of the fall damage when dropped, even from a more significant height or under a hefty load.

You can also get them in various weights. From 10 pounds all the way to 45 pounds. Depending on how much you would like to work with.

The main thing is that they are top-quality and affordable, which is excellent in itself – but you can also buy them separately in pairs of your chosen weight or buy them as a premade set of 160 lbs to 340 lbs. And if you buy them as a whole set, they will cost you even less!
