Whether vitamins affect weight gain is not a simple yes or no question. Several factors will determine whether vitamins will have any effect on your ability to gain weight. In short, the only way to gain weight is to eat more calories than you’re burning. If you’re doing this consistently, then you will gain weight. 

However, if you’re struggling to eat in a caloric surplus, you may be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals. So, what vitamins are good for weight gain? Vitamin D deficiency, for example, is associated with a loss of appetite.  Taking a multivitamin supplement may help with this issue, which will add more calories to your diet, and lead to more consistent weight gain. As a result, if you’re looking for vitamins that cause weight gain, Vitamin D is a good place to start as it is also important for muscle health and recovery, which is crucial when bulking.

Additionally, many vitamins and minerals are necessary for energy production. If you’re deficient in several vitamins, energy production likely won’t be very efficient, which may lead to lower energy while training and less muscle growth.

1. If You Have Malabsorption Conditions or Significant Food Intolerances

First, one of the most common reasons people become deficient in certain micronutrients even with seemingly adequate intake is because of malabsorption conditions and food intolerances such as celiac or lactose intolerance. These conditions may make it difficult to absorb certain nutrients, leading to a multivitamin being necessary for proper nutrient intake. 

2. If You Rely on a Narrow Range of Foods

Similar to the point above, dietary restrictions may make it difficult to get all the nutrients you need. Restrictive diets like keto and veganism both commonly lead to nutrient deficiencies. Because broadening your diet may not always be an option for medical or personal reasons, using a multivitamin supplement can be a good way to make up for these gaps in your diet.

3. If You Are Taking Certain Medicines

If you’ve decided you would benefit from the use of a multivitamin to help you bulk, then there are 2 specific things you’ll want to look out for. Namely, third-party certifications, and the dose of the supplement. 

1. Choose Products With USP or Other Recognized Certification

First, take a look at what certifications a certain product has. These can be from USP, Informed Sport, or any other recognized third-party. These are generally a good indication of the quality, potency, and manufacturing process of a certain product. 

2. Choose Products That Cover No More Than 100% of Daily Needs

Additionally, consider the formula, especially with how it relates to your personal needs. A good rule of thumb is to choose a multivitamin that has most of the ingredients dosed right around 100% DV. For most vitamins, anything more than this will not be put to good use in your body, making it generally pointless to take this much. 

How to Gain Weight With or Without Vitamin Supplements?

While vitamin supplements may make it easier to gain weight in certain cases, regardless of whether you’re taking a multivitamin, there are a few general rules for gaining weight we recommend following.

First, be sure you’re eating in a moderate caloric surplus. An additional 250-500 calories on top of your maintenance calories should be ideal for most people to prevent unnecessary fat gain. Also, be sure you’re eating enough protein to promote muscle growth, with 0.7-1g per pound of body weight being ideal.

Next, practice consistent weight training. When paired with adequate calories and protein, this will provide your muscles the stimulus they need to grow over time. Find a program that hits every major muscle group 1-2 times a week.

Finally, be patient! Weight gain is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t gain a bunch of weight right away. You can slowly add more calories to your diet if you don’t notice any progress. If you stay consistent, you’ll be sure to gain a significant amount of weight over time.

Camila has worked as a Nutritionist for 7 years. In addition to being a nutritionist, she is an amateur weightlifting athlete for 2 years. Camila has experience at Flamengo’s football base and in a food supplement company and currently provides services at a clinic. At the moment she is coursing a postgraduate study in Sports Nutrition.
