1. Rehydrate

First, it’s critical to hydrate properly before, during, and after a workout. This is because when you sweat during a workout, your body is losing water with electrolytes that need to be rebalanced through hydration. While it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day, it’s especially important if you’re working out regularly. Luckily, drinking a post-workout beverage is a great way to get some fluids in while also getting active ingredients and nutrients in as well.

2. Refuel

When working out, your body is depleted of its glycogen stores. This is why it’s so important to eat enough carbohydrates throughout the day. Eating carbohydrates leads to insulin secretion, which then causes glycogen synthesis. Glycogen is partly what powers your muscles through your workouts, so to recover effectively and to have the best performance possible we recommend eating a healthy balance of carbs, fats, and protein to hit your caloric goals throughout the day. Of course, if you follow a keto or low-carb diet, this advice may not apply to you! While carb-rich diets are ideal for exercise performance, many people prefer low-carb diets in order to restrict their calories to lose weight, but keep in mind - to lose weight you need to be on a caloric deficit regardless of what kind of macro-split (high carb/low fat or low carb/high fat) you are following.

3. Repair

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, is repairing your muscles with protein. When you workout, you’re breaking down your muscle fibers with the goal of having them repair stronger than they were before. By eating enough protein, you’re giving your muscles the amino acids they need to be repaired effectively.

The reason we included 3 different supplement types in this article – post-workout formulas, protein powders, and mass gainers – is because everyone will have slightly different requirements for what they need in a post-workout drink. For those who already eat proper post-workout meals rich in proteins and carbohydrates, they will be better off with a post-workout formula focusing on active ingredients instead of macronutrients. For the average person who plans to have a balanced post-workout meal rich in protein and carbohydrates, a drink may not be necessary, as they can obtain these nutrients from food. It's essential to select post-workout supplements carefully, considering your specific fitness goals and dietary requirements. While I personally like fairlife drinks, I would recommend exploring different brands and products to find the one that suits your needs best.”

1. Situations that Require Consumption of Carbohydrates Immediately After Training

The main reason someone would need carbohydrates immediately after working out is if they have another workout to do in a few hours. In this case, their post-workout meal is doubling as a pre-workout meal. Because of this, refilling their glycogen stores as quickly as possible will be ideal to maximize performance in the next workout. Next one is if you have one session in the evening and the next day in the morning. Basically when there is less than 24h between sessions you may benefit from post-workout carbs.

Beyond this, there aren’t many scenarios where consuming carbs directly post-workout will be necessary. For most people, waiting a little while won’t make a major difference in their recovery, provided they’re still eating enough total carbs throughout the day. 

2. Situations where immediate consumption of carbohydrates after exercise is less important

It’s also worth noting that someone looking to put on muscle will likely want to consume a full meal immediately after their workout. While this isn’t as important as fueling up for a second workout, it will still be ideal to get enough calories in to promote recovery, weight gain, and muscle growth.

Especially for someone who has very high daily calorie needs, eating a carb-rich meal directly after a workout will likely be optimal to maximize total caloric intake. However, someone could still reach a caloric surplus without eating directly after a meal, making it less important than the example listed above.

3. Situations in which the consumption of carbohydrates immediately after training is not of significant importance

Really, unless you’re a professional athlete, if you have 24 hours between your workouts and sufficient caloric intake throughout the day, there’s no need to consume carbs immediately after your workout.

The main reason someone may choose not to take in any carbs after a workout is if they’re looking to lose weight, especially on a keto diet. When eating in a calorie deficit, it’s common to restrict carbohydrate intake. Limiting carbohydrate intake post-workout may help people maintain a caloric deficit, even though it will likely negatively affect their performance in the gym.

While we can’t fully recommend this approach to post-workout nutrition because of its effects on performance, it may be beneficial if your main goal is to lose weight. Overall, the vast majority of people do not have to worry about consuming carbohydrates immediately post-workout.

4. What about post-workout protein?

Overall, getting protein in immediately after your workout isn’t nearly as important as getting enough protein in throughout the day. Unless you're a professional bodybuilder, As long as you’re getting enough total protein throughout the to stimulate muscle growth, there’s no need to worry too much about when you’re consuming it.

With that being said, especially if you’re on a cut, you may want to prioritize protein intake after a workout. This is because protein is the most satiating macronutrient, and it will likely keep you feeling fuller for longer when compared to an equivalent amount of carbs.
