Martirosjan Sargis secured bronze in Snatch at the 2023 Grand Prix II weightlifting competition in Qatar
On the tenth day of the 2023 IWF Grand Prix II weightlifting competition in Qatar, Austrian Martirosjan Sargis, secured bronze in Snatch in the 109 kg men’s category.
Snatch Performance
Having last won a medal (gold) in Snatch at the 2018 European Championship, Martirosjan Sargis stormed Qatar to turn the tide of his career.
Martirosjan Sargis made three attempts. On his first attempt, he lifted 162 kg. He lifted 166kg on his second attempt to win the bronze. On his third attempt, he failed to make a good lift of 169 kg.
His past records and ranking in Snatch in major events were:
- 2023 European Championships – 173 kg – 3rd
- 2023 World Championships – 171 kg – 8th
- 2019 World Championships – 181 kg – 10th
- 2019 European Championships – 181 kg – 6th
- 2018 European Championships – 182 kg – 1st
Clean and Jerk Performance
Martirosjan failed to keep his momentum in the Clean and Jerk. With no medals in Clean and Jerk in recent years, many fans expected more from him.
He made three attempts. On his first attempt, he completed 173 kg. He completed 181 kg on his second attempt. His final attempt with 182 kg resulted in an unsuccessful lift.
He finished in eighth position on the day.
Total Performance
Martirosjan Sargis finished in fifth position with 347 kg in Total. It’s a slight improvement compared to his performance at the 2023 European Championship and World Championship, where he finished 7th and 14th.
Perhaps with practice and time, Martirosjan will show the world what he’s made of.

- 2023 European Championship – 363 kg – 7th
- 2023 World Championship – 351 kg – 14th
- 2019 European Championship – 387 kg – 8th

Born in 1986, Martirosjan Sargis is an Austrian weightlifter with over eight years of experience in the top-flight. He won the 2019 Cup of the Blue Swords tournament. He won bronze at the 2018 World Championship. He also won silver at the 2016 1st International FAJR Cup
With a few competitions leading up to the 2024 Olympics, Martirosjan Sargis has a chance to prove he can make his country proud in Paris.
