Men’s +109 kg Division Recap – IWF European Weightlifting Championships 2024

The last day of this spectacular European Weightlifting Championships showcased an unforgettable lifting session in the Men’s +109-kg weight category, where 9 male athletes were defending their titles in the Group A. 

The battle in this weight category proved lifters’ solid determination and inner power. The super heavyweight sportsmen of the Top 3 were competing till the end pushing their limits and showing extreme weights on the bar.

🥈MARTIROSYAN Simon (ARM) – 190-247-437
🥉ZIAZIULIN Eduard (AIN) – 195-241-436

The winner in today’s weight class was LALAYAN Varazdat from Armenia who lifted impressive 205 kg in Snatch on the second attempt, 250 kg in Clean & Jerk on the second try, missing his third attempt, and a total of 455 kg.

The second place was occupied by his compatriot MARTIROSYAN Simon from Armenia who got in a total of 437 kg, falling behind the winner by 18 kilos. He lifted 190 kg in Snatch on the first try, and 247 kg in Clean & Jerk on the second attempt.

The bronze medalist was ZIAZIULIN Eduard: he lifted 195 kg in Snatch on the first try, 241 kg in Clean & Jerk on the third attempt, and he got 436 kg in the sum.

Top Athletes’ Review

The Men’s +109-kg weight category winner LALAYAN Varazdat, an Armenian weightlifter, is a two-time silver and bronze medalist at the World Championships; gold, two-time silver, and bronze medalist at the European Championships.

Speaking about the silver medalist, Simon Martirosyan is an Armenian weightlifter, Olympian, a two-time gold World Champion, and two-time gold, bronze, and silver medalist at the European Championships.

The bronze holder ZIAZIULIN Eduard showed his second-best personal best in a total of 436 kg compared to his previous result of 447 kg which was 13 kilos more.

Let’s admit that everyone was waiting for Lasha Talakhadze’s performance,  however he didn’t compete today. Maybe he decided to preserve his condition for the final qualifying competition in Thailand, or he’s targeted directly to Paris.

The USA was represented by two weightlifters: WILKES Caine who resulted in 390 kg in total, while his teammate MEDINA Alejandro bombed out in Clean&Jerk and lifted just from the first attempt in the Snatch round.

Snatch results:

The Snatch session was quite thrilling as there were lots of no-lifts in the second and third attempts. An athlete from France, COULLET Anthony, bombed out from the SnatchSnatcg round trying to lift 162 kg and 167 kg on the second and third attempts. The Snatch leaders showed the following results: 

🥇LALAYAN Varazdat (ARM) – 205 kg
🥈ZIAZIULIN Eduard (AIN) –  195 kg
🥉MARTIROSYAN Simon (ARM) –  190 kg

During the Clean & Jerk exercise, there were half of the red lights of the majority of lifts, while the French lifter withdrew from the round.
