It is the most abundant protein in our body and, in general, one of the most abundant proteins in living organisms. Collagen is an important part of the skin, ligaments, tendons, bones, cartilage, blood vessels and other structures.
This protein has a rigid structure, good flexibility and durability. What distinguishes this type of protein from others is the very high content of the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline.
In total, scientists have identified 28 types of collagen, but the most common types are collagen types I-V. More than 90% of all collagen in the structures of our body consists of type I collagen, because this type is widespread in almost all connective tissues.

In the case of this individual product, a dosage of 2.5 g is sufficient to get potential effects, if the source of collagen is porcine-derived (obtained from pigs).
If the source is fish raw materials, then the manufacturer recommends a dose of 5 g. By the way, you can usually find VERISOL® in the form of gummies, so this type of supplement did not make it into this collagen powder reviews.

How to Find the Best Collagen Powder?
Below I've highlighted some key recommendations to help you decide which product is best for you.
1. Ideally, Choose Under the Supervision of a Doctor
This might not be the advice you want to see. However, this review focuses on a particular type of collagen in powder form, which may not be the best choice for your specific application.
The doctor will take into account your specific goals and help you choose the best type (I, II, III, or I + III types in one product, as is often the case), as well as the form of the supplement (powder, capsule, gummies) and the necessary dosage.
Also, keep in mind that not everyone can take this type of supplement without risks to their health or well-being. For example, collagen supplementation can cause unpleasant symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract or skin rashes.
They can even have a hypoglycemic effect, so people taking drugs to lower blood sugar need to be especially careful.
2. Choose Based on Your Goals
This advice is similar to the previous one. I will have to repeat it again - for joints, UC-II may be the best option. On the other hand, the powdered form can be a suitable option for the rehabilitation of injured tendons or ligaments, for joint pain relief that occurs due to physical activity, and as an auxiliary supplement for strengthening bones and reducing the risk of fractures.
By the way, many people are confused about how collagen peptides differ from hydrolyzed collagen. Let's clear up this confusion. Collagen peptides are the same as Collagen hydrolysate, as well as Hydrolyzed collagen.
You can check it here. A hydrolyzate is a form of collagen that has been hydrolyzed by enzymes. This allows the powder not to form a gel-like mass when mixed, but instead to mix easily in water (including cold water) or another beverage or liquid.
3. Prefer Third-Party Tested Supplement
If you want to minimize the likelihood that a product actually contains less of a key ingredient than the manufacturer states, choose brands with a proven reputation. Also, to minimize risks in the context of purity and content of prohibited substances, it is best to choose products that have certification or approval from recognized third parties.
Examples of such certifications are NSF for Sport, Informed Sport / Choice, USP, as well as ConsumerLab, which tests dietary supplements for the content of the declared ingredient, and can also conduct testing for the level of heavy metals.
The advice to choose third-party certified supplements applies to any dietary supplement, not just collagen. By the way, even if you are looking exclusively for organic collagen powder, do not think that this guarantees the purity of the supplement, because organic does not mean tested for the content of heavy metals or other substances that can harm health.
In fact, with extensive experience in testing dietary supplements, the independent organization ConsumerLab has found that organic products are more likely to be contaminated with heavy metals. Therefore, nothing is guaranteed and it is still better to choose a supplement that has an NSF for Sport, Informed Sport or USP label.
4. Consider the Number of Servings in the Package
As I mentioned, this is the type of supplement that needs to be used for a long period of time before any effects are expected. For the minimum effective threshold, it is better to set 2-3 months of continuous collagen use. With this in mind, it is important to know at least roughly in advance how much of this supplement you will need. What can be done:
- Determine how many grams of powder per day you will use (10 g, 15 g or maybe 20 g),
- Calculate how many packages you will need. For example, buying a large package (as in the case of BulkSupplements) will provide you with collagen for many weeks or even months.
5. Consider the Sum of Key Factors When Choosing the Best Product
Given the same form and dosage of the supplement, the key factors for any product are safety as well as cost per serving. If the supplement has certification from a recognized third party and costs less than the competition, it's a win-win.
You can also do your research on brand reputation if the product you're considering costs significantly less, but doesn't have certification from NSF for Sport, Informed Sport or USP.
The absence of such certification is not a sign of a poor-quality or contaminated product. Just as the presence of certification is not a 100% guarantee of purity and safety. It's just something you need to be aware of if you want to minimize potential risks.
I recommend using the ConsumerLab, which I use personally and which is mentioned by experts from the National Institutes of Health.
There you can see a large database of supplements by category (vitamins, minerals, multivitamins, protein supplements, etc.) and find products without certification by recognized third parties, but still tested for the content of the declared ingredient, as well as the level of heavy metals.
Unfortunately, it's not a free resource, but it's worth every cent!
6. Consider Taste, Texture and Mixability
If you only care about getting the key ingredient you're buying the supplement for, this factor may not be important to you at all. However, you can still choose an alternative that will still meet your requirements, but with a better taste and mixability.
If you are going to use the supplement for a long period of time, this factor is still important. So don't get stuck on one product if you have many to choose from.
What Is the Best Way to Use Collagen if You Exercise?
This is a special topic. Pro-athletes, amateurs, or fitness enthusiasts who train frequently and intensely can put excessive stress on joints, ligaments, and tendons.
For example, in conditions of excessive training with high loading impact and repetitive movements, inflammation and pain may occur in the connective tissues, which, if ignored and untreated, can lead to the development of chronic degenerative diseases.
In these situations, taking collagen in the form of a dietary supplement may be beneficial. For example, the Australian Sports Commission considers collagen supplementation as a potentially useful part of an overall injury management and/or prevention plan in addition to established methods that work well.
Please note that collagen is not placed in group A (supplements with "Strong scientific evidence"), but only in group B, where there are supplements labeled "Emerging scientific support, deserving of further research."
1. Use Daily to Support Healthy Joints, Tendons, Ligaments and Bones
The use of this supplement without specific dosage as well as timing in relation to physical activity seems acceptable in the absence of problems with joints, ligaments and tendons. In this case, this supplement can be considered as one that contributes to the maintenance of connective tissue health.
You can also use a post-workout supplementation to help repair and maintain connective tissue. Another potential advantage in the case of taking it after exercise is the potential mitigation of the phenomenon called DOMS, which stands for delayed onset muscle soreness.
2. Use With Timing: 40-60 Minutes Before Training
And here is the most interesting part related to timing. If you suffer from ligament and tendon problems, timing can play a very significant role in how well collagen peptides powder will work.
The fact is that mechanical loading on ligaments and tendons may be needed to create the cascade of signals required for enhanced production collagen proteins within these target tissues. This is called the 'mechano-transduction' hypothesis.
In other words, in the absence of exercise collagen in musculoskeletal tissue does not respond to collagen obtained from supplements or food.
In addition to this, tendons and ligaments are dense connective tissues with a very limited blood supply due to poor vascularization (the latter means the spread of blood vessels into the tissues, thanks to which these tissues receive oxygen and nutrients).
Obviously, with poor blood supply, nutrients (including amino acids from the collagen peptide supplement) are poorly delivered to the target tissues.
As a result, in order for amino acids to get into the ligaments and tendons, it is necessary to 'switch on' their ability to uptake these amino acids, as well as turn on the cascade of signals that are responsible for the synthesis of collagen proteins in the ligaments and tendons. Exercise or specialized rehabilitation sessions act as this switch.
And since the peak of amino acids in the bloodstream is reached 40-60 minutes after taking collagen, it is best to take the supplement 40-60 minutes before starting exercises or rehabilitation sessions. In this way, you will maximize the likelihood that the needed amino acids will reach the target tissues and provide benefits.
Among these benefits can be both maintaining the health of connective tissues, as well as promoting better recovery after injuries.
3. How About Collagen Powder for Weight Loss?
Overall, in conditions of calorie deficit, this supplement can help improve body composition, including fat loss. On the other hand, compared to supplementation with whey protein, collagen doesn't look as compelling.
Also, I would like to bring to your attention that during the day we do not take only a collagen supplement or only a whey protein supplement. Therefore, it is better to look at the diet plan as a whole.
As long as you maintain an energy deficit and get enough total protein from a variety of sources (both animal and plant-based), you can successfully lose weight. At the same time, it is not even necessary to take any supplements.
How Much Powder Collagen to Use for Best Results?
In fact, it is not easy to give clear recommendations on dosage, because different types of collagen can be used for different purposes. Depending on the type of supplement, the dosage also differs. If UC-II is excluded (let me remind you again that this supplement is most intensively studied specifically for joints), then the total effective dosage range is approximately 2.5 g to 15 g.
However, even within this range, the appropriate dosage may vary depending on which product you are using. For example, in the case of FORTIGEL® or TENDOFORTE®, a dosage of 5 grams may already be sufficient for specific purposes, because it was in such dosages that they were used in studies that demonstrated positive effects.
If it is a non-specialized formula with low-weight collagen peptides (like FORTIGEL®, TENDOFORTE® and VERISOL®), then the dosage may or should be higher. That is why most products of this rating have a dosage range of 10 to 20 grams per serving.
Moreover, if you wish to take collagen protein powder around training sessions to increase the availability of amino acids to target tissues (such as tendons and ligaments), a minimum of 20g may be the optimal dosage (although 15 g can also be enough).
How Can You Use the Supplement?
In general, it is better to follow the recommendations that are indicated on the packaging of a specific product, because the brand knows better with which drink or liquid its product is best combined.
For example, a specific product may be the best choice for adding to a hot drink, while when added to a cold liquid, the same product can become a real nightmare.
In general, the hydrolyzed powder mixes well in both cold and hot liquids. It is stable at high temperatures, so it can be added not only to hot coffee or soups, but also to baked goods.

What Brand of Collagen Is the Most Effective?
Many brands produce and sell this type of supplement, but one of them cannot be singled out as "the most effective", because protein is protein. You can choose any product from this review, because only brands with a good reputation were included.
Moreover, most of the supplements in this review have certification from a recognized third party.
Is It Ok to Take Collagen Every Day?
In general, it is a safe supplement for daily use by healthy people, and in order to get the expected effects, it is not enough to take collagen for several days or weeks. It will take at least 2-3 months or more of continuous use to reap the potential benefits.

Not understanding these nuances or neglecting the recommendations for proper timing of supplementation (I’m talking about delivering the necessary amino acids to the target tissues) can make the difference in its ability to be an effective supplement or a supplement that is a waste of money.
What Is the Best Collagen to Look Younger?
Since "looking younger" primarily means the appearance of the skin, then collagen types I and III are relevant here. All products from this rating contain exactly these types, so they can be considered as suitable collagen powder for skin.
Also as mentioned above, marine collagen shows potential for improving skin elasticity and wrinkle prevention. Therefore, if a particular product contains collagen of marine origin, it can be considered as a supplement with specific benefits to skin.
There is also an alternative and possibly the best choice - the specialized product Verisol, which contains type I.
Conclusion
Collagen protein powder is obviously a very popular dietary supplement. However, we should be careful with the claims, because there is still no evidence that this supplement has incredible effects for all the purposes it is said to do.
